New Year's Eve in Leipzig 2026 – Beethoven at the Gewandhaus and More

📍 Leipzig (various venues)

New Year's Eve in Leipzig 2026 with Beethoven's 9th at the Gewandhaus, opera gala and boutique hotels at Bayrischer Platz or in Connewitz. Tips on tickets and where to stay.

Your Programme for New Year’s Eve 2026 in Leipzig

New Year’s Eve in Leipzig attracts guests from across Germany every year who want to see in the new year with concert and gala rather than fireworks in the street. Tour operators sell packages with Gewandhaus tickets, hotel and city tours. That works, but you do not need a travel-agency package if you put programme and accommodation together yourself.

New Year’s Eve in Leipzig means first-class stages for culture and classical fans: Gewandhaus and opera shape the musical turn of the year in the city. For short distances afterwards, our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz is the obvious choice. Anyone who deliberately seeks the south or finds the city centre full has our Hotel Alt-Connewitz as a second option in the little BIG family. In the Connewitz neighbourhood and on KarLi, New Year’s Eve is often livelier and louder than downtown: bars, pubs and parties for everyone who does not want to spend the turn of the year only in the concert hall.

Below are the main fixed points for New Year’s Eve 2026 in Leipzig, with a focus on classical and festive shows in the city.

Beethoven and the Ninth at the Gewandhaus

The big anchor for New Year’s Eve in Leipzig is the Grand Concert for the Turn of the Year at the Gewandhaus: on 31 December 2026 at 17:00, the Gewandhaus Orchestra under Andris Nelsons plays Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the Grand Hall. Soloists are Christiane Karg, Gerhild Romberger, Klaus Florian Vogt and Alexander Roslavets, with choirs from Oper Leipzig, GewandhausChor and GewandhausKinderchor.

The tradition goes back a long way: the Ninth sounded in Leipzig as early as 1826 in a Beethoven cycle, and for over a hundred years it has belonged to New Year’s Eve. No wonder tour operators pack exactly this concert into their deals. Tickets are in demand: subscribers and GHO card holders can book from 13 June 2026, general presale starts 27 June 2026.

Anyone in the Grand Hall at 17:00 starts New Year’s Eve with the musical highlight before midnight. Afterwards it often continues: dinner in Südvorstadt, a drink at Augustusplatz or a party in the city. Staying city-centre then does not mean going to bed at 21:00, but having short distances between stops and getting back to the hotel quickly after the last programme point. From the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz you reach the Gewandhaus on foot or by tram via Augustusplatz. More on the location in our article on Hotel am Bayrischen Platz.

New Year’s Eve Gala at the Opera

One hour after the Gewandhaus start, the New Year’s Eve Gala begins at 18:00 at Oper Leipzig: overtures and arias from operas by Rossini, Puccini and Bizet plus highlights from popular operettas. Festive, uplifting and the right finale in the opera house if you prefer the turn of the year on the opera stage rather than on a dance floor.

You cannot combine both concerts if you want to hear each programme in full. Many guests deliberately choose one of the two and plan the evening afterwards at an easy pace in the city. Anyone with the opera gala on the list benefits from the same advantage as Gewandhaus visitors: our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz is nearby, return by tram or on foot without a detour via the main station.

More Concerts and Shows in the City

Besides Gewandhaus and opera, there are more festive formats on 31 December 2026. At the Congress Hall at the zoo, the Leipzig Philharmonic plays its New Year’s Eve concert with opera singers, operetta melodies and classical works, at 17:00 and 19:00. That is its own programme, not the same as the Grand Concert at the Gewandhaus with the 9th Symphony.

Anyone looking for show and menu finds dinner shows in the city too. On New Year’s Eve, the Historischer Spiegelpalast at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz hosts the dinner show GANS GANZ ANDERS by Krystallpalast Varieté, starting at 20:00, with show and dinner in salon-car ambience. Tour operators often include it in hotel packages, but you can also book separately. For guests at the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz, Gewandhaus, opera and the city centre remain the natural frame.

Party in the City on New Year’s Eve

Not everyone wants to spend the turn of the year in the concert hall. If you want to celebrate in the evening, Leipzig also has parties and galas, for example the New Year’s party Ballroom Boheme at Felsenkeller on Karl-Heine-Straße with live bands, DJs and optional buffet in the VIP ticket. Doors from 19:00. That is in Plagwitz, not around the corner from the Gewandhaus, but reachable from the city by tram.

If you want classical by day and a different beat in the evening, a city-centre hotel is the more practical base: concert first, then tram to the party, back to the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz. You do not have to choose between a culture programme and celebrating from the south of the city.

Tickets and New Year’s Eve in Leipzig

Tickets for the Gewandhaus concert are on gewandhausorchester.de, the opera gala via Oper Leipzig. Popular dates sell out early, especially as tour operators bind capacity in parallel. If you book yourself, put the June 2026 presale dates in your calendar.

The city of Leipzig summarises rules and event information at leipzig.de. There is still no central city festival with official large-scale fireworks in Leipzig in 2026. Around midnight the city lights up mainly through private firework displays in many streets and squares, within the usual legal exceptions. From 2027 the city plans a central light show downtown. Dress warmly, secure tickets in advance and roughly plan your return to the hotel.

On New Year’s Eve, trams and buses run in Leipzig, but allow some buffer after midnight. Anyone arriving from another city reaches the city centre well via the main station. For a short trip, two or three nights around 31 December are often enough.

Staying at little BIG hotels

New Year’s Eve in Leipzig is mainly a story for guests who take culture seriously and want short distances in between. Our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz is the first address for that: Gewandhaus and opera are within reach, Augustusplatz is around the corner, and when the evening winds down you are back at the house quickly instead of driving across the city again.

Our Hotel Alt-Connewitz is not an alternative because of proximity to the Gewandhaus, but a deliberately different choice. Anyone seeking Leipzig’s south, visiting guests in Connewitz or finding nothing free in the city centre lands in a house with neighbourhood character. On New Year’s Eve, Connewitz and KarLi are often noticeably livelier and louder than on normal weekends, with intense fireworks and party life. That suits a different audience than classical fans at Bayrischer Platz. More on the neighbourhood in our Alt-Connewitz article.
