Historic and central – our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz in Leipzig

11 June 2026

Hotel am Bayrischen Platz in Leipzig city centre near Augustusplatz and the university hospital, listed building with eleven free parking spaces and excellent transport.

Right at Bayerischer Bahnhof

You want to arrive in step with the city? Not get off somewhere on the ring road, but land right in the middle and still stay in a house with character, not just a room number in an anonymous chain hotel.

Our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz is at Paul-List-Straße 5 in Zentrum Süd, on the square of the same name with views of Bayerischer Bahnhof. This is not a soulless new build, but a listed city hotel with roots in the 19th century and part of the little BIG hotels family for over a year now. Our house history includes Karl Marx as an early VIP guest, from inn via Hotel Hochstein to the present day. You can read that chapter and more in our History to Check Into blog.

When you leave our hotel along Paul-List-Straße towards the city centre, Bayerischer Bahnhof with its tracks sits right opposite: one of Germany’s oldest stations, today an S-Bahn hub and a visible piece of Leipzig transport history, not just a dot on the map. Two streets west the KarLi begins, still close enough for an evening out, but deliberately not on the doorstep. In the other direction you reach Augustusplatz in about ten minutes on foot, without commuting halfway across Leipzig first.

Opera Gewandhaus and more on foot

Staying central with us mostly means short distances and plenty you can do on foot. From the hotel you reach Augustusplatz with the Oper and Gewandhaus in around ten minutes, the Grassimuseum for applied art and Grassi architecture likewise within walking distance in Leipzig’s centre. Nikolaikirche by the Old Town Hall, Thomaskirche with its Bach tradition and the main station are all a short walk away, between ten and twenty minutes depending on pace.

If you want to go a step further in the evening, you are quickly in the thick of things on the KarLi. Which shops, bars and stops are really worth it is bundled in our KarLi guide. For green in between, Clara-Zetkin-Park and Fockeberg tempt just to the south without leaving the centre.

Reception at our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz

S-Bahn and tram at your door

Our Hotel am Bayrischen Platz scores with transport links that are rarely this central and this practical at once in Leipzig. S-Bahn station Bayerischer Bahnhof sits directly opposite; from there you reach Leipzig main station and Leipzig/Halle airport in about twenty minutes by S-Bahn. Tram lines 2, 9 and 16 stop in front of the house, plus bus line 60 in both directions.

You practically travel by train to the front door. The S-Bahn at Bayerischer Bahnhof takes you to the main station and Leipzig/Halle airport, tram and bus stop right outside the hotel. Good connections and a central location are not mutually exclusive here; you have both from the same address.

Many of our guests come because of the proximity to Universitätsklinikum Leipzig on the Liebigstraße campus. The hospital grounds lie in the same district; from our hotel you reach them in about six minutes on foot. If you are looking for a hotel near the university hospital as a relative, patient or visitor, that is often exactly why you land with us.

Eleven parking spaces in central Leipzig

Parking a car in Leipzig’s centre is usually its own chapter, even when you drive to the university hospital during the day. We have eleven free spaces in the courtyard, first come, first served, a rare plus in this location. You enter via Straße des 18. Oktober past the hotel, not via Paul-List-Straße. The team will gladly explain the way when you arrive.

If the courtyard is full or you arrive in the evening, the surrounding streets are worth a look. In Zentrum-Süd and Zentrum-Südost, the parking fee at many meters applies during the day until 18:00 or 20:00 depending on the zone; from 18:00 until 08:00 the next morning it is usually free. Straße des 18. Oktober, Philipp-Rosenthal-Straße and Nürnberger Straße often offer better chances in the evening than during the day near the hospital. Resident parking zones and no-stopping signs still apply. It gets tighter on RB Leipzig home match days or when there are events at Alte Messe.

Rooms from solo to family

Rooms are sorted by need: singles for solo and business travellers, doubles for couples, one double with twin beds, a triple and a quadruple for families or small groups. If you want to feel the house history for real, you can request the Karl Marx room directly with us; he stayed there in 1874 with his daughter Eleanor, and a plaque on the building remembers it. Sizes range from about thirteen to twenty-five square metres, all with shower, Wi‑Fi, desk and what you need for a few nights in the city.

We do not promise design-hotel interiors in every corner. The rooms are well kept and fit the house, a listed building with history instead of a glossy catalogue.

An honest word

We only brought Hotel am Bayrischen Platz into the little BIG hotels family about a year ago. A major room update is still ahead, and we do not beat around the bush: if a freshly renovated boutique interior is your main criterion, we are not the right fit yet. What guests tell us back is something else: the location by the station and Augustusplatz, eleven free parking spaces, warm service and this historic house with real character.

If you want a hotel in Leipzig’s centre that is central and honest at once, you are in the right place.

Everyday life at our hotel

A city hotel has to work simply day to day. Reception is staffed daily from 07:00 to 22:00, you can check in online and find a team that knows Leipzig and the area. Breakfast is served daily with many homemade specialities from 07:00 to 10:00; more in Our Hotel Breakfast.

As in all little BIG hotels there is no coffee machine in the room; instead our coffee flat rate in the house from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Hotel am Bayrischen Platz is non-smoking, pets are welcome for a flat fee of twenty-five euros per stay, and luggage can stay at reception before and after your stay.
