Berlin knows how to do Advent, and 2026 brings another full season of Christmas lights and market stalls. We take you through the city’s best Christmas markets, each with its own character, from the classic postcard scene by Alexanderplatz and Rotes Rathaus to the winter market at Schlossplatz with Berlin Cathedral and the Humboldt Forum in view. You also get evening light walks in the Botanical Garden and the Tierpark, plus Advent concerts when you want a quieter night. Below you will find dates, tips and the hotel recommendations that fit each stop.
WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt
WeihnachtsZauber is back on Gendarmenmarkt. White pagoda stalls, live music and proper food make it one of the polished stops of the season. Wander under the dome, then eat something warm. Think proper dinner more than snack-bar queues.
From CALMA Berlin Mitte walk to Oranienburger Tor, take the U6 and you are three stops from Stadtmitte, about fifteen minutes to Gendarmenmarkt door to door. Weekday afternoons are usually calmer than Saturday night. Our CALMA keeps the trip easy, so you can enjoy the market instead of worrying about the journey.

Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Rotes Rathaus
Outside Rotes Rathaus you get the classic postcard shot. Berliner Weihnachtszeit brings a historic Ferris wheel, ice skating around the Neptune Fountain and old-style stalls. Good for families and photos, and the skyline comes free. Please check dates and hours again on berlin.de shortly before you go.

Wintermarkt Schlossplatz at the Humboldt Forum
Right by the Humboldt Forum, Schloßplatz turns into a winter market with views of Lustgarten, Museum Island and Berlin Cathedral. Craft and food stalls fill the square and the Schlüterhof, with light shows on the façades. Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a free laser show. On the Spree terraces you sit facing the cathedral and the TV Tower. Admission is free. If you want atmosphere without the big-crowd Christmas-market crush, this winter market is a strong pick. From our CALMA Berlin Mitte take tram M5 or M6. Including a short walk you are there in about 18 to 19 minutes.

Lucia at the Kulturbrauerei
The Lucia Christmas Market sits in the Kulturbrauerei courtyards, and that closed-in setting is the whole point. Old brewery brick, fire pits, the “sky column” and berry punch. Busy evenings can feel snug. You get a nice mix of Prenzlauer Berg families, locals and visitors. From our CALMA, tram or U-Bahn gets you to Prenzlauer Berg and the Kulturbrauerei easily.

Spandau Christmas Market
Old Town Spandau sits farther out than the centre markets. What you get instead is a proper old-town Christmas feel by the water, with squares, lanes and the sense of a small festive town. Tip: U7 to Altstadt Spandau, then wander Marktplatz and Reformationsplatz. There are car parks nearby too.

Charlottenburg Palace in Advent
Outside lit-up Charlottenburg Palace, Advent turns properly baroque. The façade glows, stalls fill the courtyard and park approaches, and the light shows put the palace centre stage after dark. From our LINDEMANN’S on Potsdamer Straße and from fjord hotel berlin you reach the palace easily by U-Bahn or bus.

Winterwelt at Potsdamer Platz
At Potsdamer Platz, Advent meets a bit of action. Winterwelt is mainly about the toboggan run and that winter-sports feel in the middle of the city. Around it you warm up, eat and stroll the market stalls while the towers and lights set the mood. visitBerlin often has Winterwelt opening from late October, with the Christmas market part following later. Gedächtniskirche City West
On Breitscheidplatz between Ku’damm and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church you get cosy huts, a carpet of lights and classic City West energy. This is one of the few markets still open after Christmas. From our fjord hotel berlin, LINDEMANN’S and the YARD you are close.

Christmas Garden and Christmas at the Tierpark
Not classic markets, but two evening light walks. Christmas Garden takes you on a set route through the Botanical Garden past light installations, fountains and festive stops, ending at a Christmas village with hot drinks. Weihnachten im Tierpark does the same idea inside Tierpark Berlin. You follow a lit path through the park and past food huts. Book tickets and time slots ahead for both. If you want both, look at the Winterzauber ticket that combines Christmas Garden and the Tierpark.
Christmas Garden sits especially close to our Anna 1908 in Dahlem. For the Tierpark take the U5 to Tierpark station. From our CALMA Berlin Mitte it is about 35 minutes with one change, so you can enjoy the evening without fighting for a car.

Advent concerts in Berlin
Berlin puts on a full spread of Advent and Christmas concerts, from big oratorios to choir nights in historic churches. At Berlin Cathedral the 2026 line-up includes Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, a sing-along concert and the Rundfunkchor Berlin Christmas concert. At Gendarmenmarkt, in the French Friedrichstadtkirche, the Berlin Boys’ Choir sings Advent songs in December, and the Konzerthaus has its own Christmas concerts. From our CALMA Berlin Mitte the cathedral and Gendarmenmarkt are easy.
At the Philharmonie the Berliner Philharmoniker bring Berlioz’s “L’Enfance du Christ” to the stage in mid-December, a big Christmas oratorio with choir. At the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Bach’s Christmas Oratorio runs with the Bach Choir, plus more Advent concerts. Staying overnight for Advent
Markets, light walks and concerts sit across the city, so it pays to pick your base with that in mind. For Gendarmenmarkt, Rotes Rathaus, Wintermarkt Schlossplatz, Lucia and Berlin Cathedral, our CALMA Berlin Mitte on Linienstraße is the natural home base. Christmas Garden is easiest from our Anna 1908, because Dahlem puts you close to the Botanical Garden. Christmas at the Tierpark works well from CALMA on the U5. For Winterwelt at Potsdamer Platz, the Memorial Church market and concerts near the Philharmonie, our houses fjord hotel berlin, LINDEMANN’S and the YARD sit especially well.
