What exactly is the Leipzig Book Fair?
The Leipzig Book Fair 2026 is the major spring gathering for the book and media industry in German-speaking countries. Publishers, authors, translators, bookstores, media and, of course, lots of readers meet every year in March at the Leipzig Exhibition Center to present new publications, discuss trends and experience literature up close.
With over 2,000 exhibitors from around 45 countries and almost 300,000 visitors in recent editions, the Leipzig Book Fair is one of the largest literary events in Europe. It is both a trade fair where rights are traded and programs are planned – but also a huge reading festival where you can experience authors live, buy books directly and be drawn into the program at many stands and stages.
When and where will the Leipzig Book Fair 2026 take place?
The Leipzig Book Fair 2026 will take place from March 19 to 22, 2026 on the grounds of the Leipzig Trade Fair in the north of the city. For four days, the exhibition halls will be transformed into a sea of books, stages, cosplayers and reading stages. At the same time, the Manga Comic Con takes place, which makes the fair an additional highlight for all fans of manga, anime, comics and games.
Getting there is easy: S-Bahn and streetcar lines run directly from Leipzig Central Station to the trade fair entrance, and your trade fair ticket usually also serves as a ticket for local public transportation. If you are traveling from further away, you should book a hotel in Leipzig early – the city is traditionally very busy over the trade fair weekend.
What can I expect at the Leipzig Book Fair 2026?
In short: quite a lot. Over the four days, the fair offers a program with several thousand events spread across the grounds and the entire city. According to the organizer, the program includes over 2,000 events at more than 300 reading locations with around 3,000 participants – from large reading stages and panel discussions to signing sessions, workshops and participatory formats.
You can stroll through the halls, browse at stands, spontaneously slip into a reading or specifically pick out program items. Many publishers show their spring programs, there are extra areas for children’s and young adult books, education, audio books, independent publishers and, of course, the colorful world of Manga Comic Con. If you want, bring a large bag – buying books is expressly allowed, and thanks to trade fair bookstores and publisher stands, you can take your discoveries home with you directly.
What is the special focus topic in 2026?
In 2026, the Leipzig Book Fair will focus on “Danube – under power and between worlds”. The program focuses on the countries and regions along the Danube and their stories, conflicts and commonalities. Book presentations, discussions and talks are planned to shed light on the Danube as a cultural and political space – from Germany and Austria to Hungary, Serbia and Romania to the Black Sea.
For you as a visitor, this means: Many events will deal with Eastern Europe, river narratives, border experiences, migration, history and the present along the Danube. The series is curated by journalist Stephan Ozsváth, who worked for a long time as an ARD correspondent in Southeast Europe. If you feel like broadening your horizons beyond the classic “German novel”, 2026 will be a particularly exciting year.
What is “Leipzig liest” all about?
The reading festival “Leipzig liest” runs parallel to the fair, bringing literature to the entire city. The festival is considered the largest reading festival in Europe and takes place every year at hundreds of reading locations: bookstores, clubs, museums, churches, bars, universities – basically every corner where you can put chairs and set up a microphone.
With over 2,000 events, there’s something going on everywhere in Leipzig: You can attend a children’s book reading in the afternoon, follow a discussion with a major non-fiction author in the evening, and later catch a poetry or indie reading in a bar. It is precisely this interplay between the exhibition halls and the city that makes the book fair vibe so special: For a few days, Leipzig becomes a single large stage for literature.
Which prizes are awarded at the Leipzig Book Fair?
An important fixture is the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. It is awarded in the categories of fiction, non-fiction/essays and translation and is endowed with a total of 60,000 euros. Publishers can submit their titles in advance, a jury selects a shortlist in each category and announces the winners on the first day of the fair.
In addition, there is the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding, which is awarded on the eve of the fair. In 2026, it will be awarded to the Croatian-Bosnian author Miljenko Jergović for his work “The Crazy Heart. Sarajevo Marlboro Remastered”, which deals with the fault lines in the history of the Western Balkans. For the trade fair audience, this means: exciting discussions with prize winners and nominees, increased attention for certain titles and often packed readings.
Who will particularly benefit from the Leipzig Book Fair 2026?
The honest answer: almost everyone who has anything to do with books. For readers, the Leipzig Book Fair is a playground of stories, authors and discoveries; you get closer to people and books than would ever be possible online. For trade visitors from publishing houses, bookstores, libraries, education or media, it is a compact update on the industry with many contacts and appointments, without the “business only” character of other trade fairs.
The trip is also worthwhile for families: There are separate areas and programs for children and young people, many hands-on activities and, of course, the Manga Comic Con with its cosplays, signing sessions and stage programs. If you treat yourself to a long weekend in Leipzig, you can easily combine trade fair visits with sightseeing, pub evenings and a walk through the Südvorstadt or Plagwitz.
Tickets & Timing
You can conveniently get tickets for the Leipzig Book Fair 2026 in the trade fair’s online ticket shop. There you will find day tickets, season tickets and usually discounts for pupils, students and other groups. If you book online in advance, you will usually benefit from slightly cheaper conditions, and the ticket also serves as a ticket for buses and trains in the Leipzig transport association during your visit to the fair.
Especially because visitor numbers have reached new records in recent years – in 2025 there were a total of around 296,000 people at the fair and “Leipzig liest” – you should book your hotel or vacation apartment in good time. Plan at least one full day at the exhibition center if you mainly want to walk through halls and stands, and another day to experience “Leipzig liest” in the city. And the most important tip: Leave enough room for spontaneous discoveries. The best book fair moments are often those that you didn’t expect at all in the morning.
Stay Centrally & Relaxed in our Leipzig Hotels
For short distances during the book fair, we recommend our two hotels: the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz in the center-south and the Hotel Alt-Connewitz in the lively Connewitz. Both are close to the city center with direct public transport connections to the Leipzig Trade Fair (including tram 16 towards Messegelände or S-Bahn). At the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz you are within walking distance of the KarLi and quickly in the city center – ideal if you want to take in some of the many readings within walking distance. The Hotel Alt-Connewitz offers charming neighborhood flair near the green spaces in the south – perfect for relaxing. Reliable WLAN, strong coffee in the morning and flexible check-in times ensure that your visit to the fair runs smoothly.
