The GRASSIMESSE unites applied art, craftsmanship and design at the GRASSI Museum – a gathering point for everyone who loves beautiful things made with purpose.
GRASSIMESSE Leipzig 2026: Design, Craftsmanship and Beautiful Things with Purpose
When Leipzig slowly slips into its cultural autumn in October, the days grow shorter and you find yourself craving exhibitions, museums and special interiors again, the GRASSIMESSE fits the city perfectly. From 23 to 25 October 2026, the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts once again becomes the meeting point for everyone who wants to do more than just look at design – they want to touch it, understand it and maybe even take something home.
The GRASSIMESSE is not a fair for fleeting trends and generic décor. It is a place for applied art, crafts and design – for ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass, furniture, fashion, paper, metal, leather and many other materials from which truly special objects can emerge. Things that look beautiful and also do something. Things that are made, considered and crafted.
A Fair with History and Present
The GRASSIMESSE has deep roots. The original Grassimessen of the 1920s were already considered a “meeting point of modernity”. Since its re-establishment in 1997, the fair has been held annually at the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts, continuing that same idea: making design visible, championing quality and showing just how diverse applied art can be today.
That is what makes the fair so compelling. It does not look back with nostalgia but connects past and present. In the Art Déco surroundings of the museum building, contemporary designs, craft precision, artistic ideas and design positions all meet. You can feel it: this is not just about buying, but about discovering, comparing, questioning and appreciating.
What to Expect at GRASSIMESSE 2026
The full exhibitor directory for 2026 will be published over the course of the year. The character of the fair, however, is clear: carefully selected works from applied art and design are shown and sold. A specialist jury selects exhibitors based on quality standards, which is what gives the fair its distinctive character.
Visitors can wander through the museum’s rooms, talk directly with designers and makers, see materials up close and discover works you won’t find in any regular shop. From fine jewellery to ceramics, from fashion to furniture, from glass to textiles – the mix is inspiring, high-quality and pleasantly personal.
That direct conversation is what makes the GRASSIMESSE special. You find out why an object looks the way it does. What technique is behind it. Which materials were used. And why good craftsmanship is often so much more than a beautiful surface.
Who Is the GRASSIMESSE For?
The GRASSIMESSE is ideal for anyone who loves beautiful things but has no interest in the interchangeable. For design enthusiasts, art lovers, collectors, interior aficionados, gift seekers, creatives and everyone who enjoys seeing how design comes to life.
But it is also a wonderful entry point for people who don’t usually spend their time at design fairs. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy the GRASSIMESSE. A little curiosity is enough. If you enjoy wandering through museums, appreciate special materials, or have an interest in interiors, jewellery, fashion or craftsmanship, you will very likely lose yourself here – and perhaps leave with a new favourite piece.
Leipzig in Design Mode: GRASSI Museum and Johannisplatz
The venue contributes enormously to the atmosphere. The GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts is one of the most important institutions for design and applied art in Europe and is located at Johannisplatz, conveniently central between the city centre, Augustusplatz and the Musikviertel. The museum building itself is already reason enough to linger a little longer.
For visitors coming to Leipzig, the GRASSIMESSE is therefore more than a single fair date. It pairs beautifully with an autumn weekend in the city: first a stroll through the centre, then the museum, then perhaps a coffee, dinner or a walk through the arcades. If you are interested in design, you get not just exhibition rooms but a piece of Leipzig’s cultural history.
Practical Information
The GRASSIMESSE Leipzig 2026 takes place from 23 to 25 October 2026 at the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts. Current opening hours are Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Day tickets are currently listed at €8, with concessions at €5.50; children and young people up to 18 years of age have free entry.
Since the fair is held inside the museum rather than on a large exhibition ground, the visit feels pleasantly focused. Still, it is worth setting aside some time. Anyone who rushes through will miss exactly what makes the GRASSIMESSE special: looking closely, the conversations, the material details and the small discoveries between the stands.
