What makes the Berlinale 2027 different

The Berlinale is one of the world’s most important film festivals, alongside Cannes and Venice. In 2027 the 77th edition runs from 10 to 21 February and brings a real change to the calendar. For the first time the festival starts on a Wednesday, one day earlier than before. The awards ceremony moves to the second Friday, 19 February. New as well are the two public days on 20 and 21 February. They offer more room for screenings once the awards have already been given.

When and where the festival runs

The heart remains Potsdamer Platz, with the Berlinale Palast and the cinemas around it. The programme does not only run there. You will also find Berlinale films in the city’s major cinemas, from Mitte and Kreuzberg to Charlottenburg.

EFM Talents and Co Production

The Berlinale also includes the industry programme of the spring. The European Film Market (EFM) runs from 10 to 16 February, with a full official market day on Wednesday and the Opening Reception on the evening of 9 February. Berlinale Talents takes place from 12 to 17 February, the Co-Production Market from 13 to 16 February. How the programme is built

The Berlinale is a mosaic of strong sections. Competition and Berlinale Special deliver the big premieres on the way to the Golden Bear. The pillars beside them are Panorama, Forum, Generation and Perspectives. Panorama and Forum stand for handwriting and risk, Generation puts a young audience at the centre, Perspectives remains the competition for feature debuts. World premieres, artistic range and international debate stay at the core, also in 2027 under the direction of Tricia Tuttle.

Tickets and planning

Ticket sales run officially via the Berlinale website. They have not started yet. Once dates and allocations are online, tickets will be available for individual screenings, often with advance sales a few days before the show. If you stay flexible, keep several cinemas in mind and use leftover tickets on the day. Industry guests need separate accreditation; market and convention access is tied to EFM or professional passes. Schedules and venue overviews are bundled on the festival website.

How to plan your festival days

Potsdamer Platz is well connected by S-Bahn and U2. Many EFM venues are within walking distance, and public transport saves you time when the city is in Berlinale mode. The best approach is a mix of must-see slots and spontaneous discoveries. Screenings in the morning, talks or Talents in the afternoon, a gala or section in the evening, that is how you get both glamour and substance. After an evening screening you can still head towards Kreuzberg, Mitte or Charlottenburg without first crossing all of Berlin.
