About GreenSign for Hotels
The GreenSign Hotel Certification is awarded by the GreenSign Institute in Berlin to create transparency regarding sustainability. It is a certification catalog recognized by the globally renowned Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) anerkannten
for determining a hotel’s level of sustainability. To obtain GreenSign Hotel Certification, a hotel must first complete the comprehensive catalog of requirements. This includes more than 130 criteria, divided into ten core areas. The evaluation program is practical and based on high
standards such as EMAS, DIN ISO 14001, ISO 26000, and the SDGs. In addition to ecological sustainability, social, cultural, and economic aspects are also covered. In addition to self-evaluation in a digital tool, the establishment of an environmental program
is mandatory, in which specific development goals are defined. The hotel’s information is first checked by GreenSign experts. An on-site audit then takes place, during which all data is put to the test. After completion, the hotel’s sustainability performance is transparently presented both overall and in the
individual core areas based on the degree of conformity. The degree of conformity ranges from a minimum conformity of 50% to a maximum of 100%. In the
GreenSign Widget, the degree of conformity is displayed directly and clearly. This is visible on the certificate, which is issued for three years. Worldwide, over 900 companies in 19 countries are undergoing GreenSign certification. (As of November 2024)
