What is the Pyronale?
The Pyronale 2025 is not an ordinary fireworks show – it is the World Championship of Pyrotechnics, which annually transforms the sky above the Maifeld next to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin into a dazzling work of art in late summer. Since 2006, six international top teams have engaged in a spectacular duel: colorful explosions synchronized to music, perfectly staged. Designer Jette Joop has specially created a trophy for it – gold, silver, and bronze shimmer when the jury decides.
A Brief Look into the History of Fireworks
Fireworks have a long and fascinating tradition, dating back to the 7th century. In China, gunpowder was discovered then – initially for military purposes, but soon also for festive occasions. The spectacle reached Europe via the Silk Road, where from the 14th century onwards it accompanied royal festivities and major events. In the Baroque era, fireworks became elaborate productions that combined architecture, music, and light. Today, modern shows like the Pyronale combine this centuries-old craftsmanship with high-tech, precision control, and creative concepts – a fusion of tradition and innovation that fascinates worldwide.
When and where Does the Spectacle Take Place?
In 2025, there’s double the fireworks magic: on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6, the Pyronale begins at 8:30 PM – doors open at 6:30 PM. The stage is the spacious Maifeld at the Olympic Stadium Berlin; the majestic backdrop simply makes the experience unique.

Who Will Compete?
Six teams with international appeal present world-class fireworks. On Friday, countries like Serbia, Hungary, and Italy will compete. On Saturday, acts from Hong Kong, Croatia, and Spain will follow. No two teams are alike – each brings its own style, culture, and creativity to the sky.
How Does the Competition Work?
Pyronale positions itself not just as a visual spectacle, but as a true competition – focusing on innovative pyrotechnics, music synchronization, and creative staging. Crucially, it’s not only about professional evaluation, but also the audience’s voice.
Amidst the fireworks frenzy, three phases unfold: A short mandatory section with predefined colors, a musically choreographed passage with official background music – and finally, a creative freestyle performance with a self-chosen selection from the “100 Best of Classical” pieces. Here, each team’s individual style unfolds, perfectly synchronized with light, sound, and emotion.
The entire event is judged by a jury that combines both expertise and cultural diversity: Ten pyrotechnics experts meet ten personalities from art, music, and society – among them celebrities like Rudolf Schenker from the Scorpions or former Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. They assess the originality, technical precision, and emotional impact of the fireworks.
But the audience also plays a role: With the SMS voting, on-site spectators can choose their favorite. This daily winner accounts for a significant 30% of the overall score – a globally recognized voting model that elevates participation to the next level. Thus, Pyronale is simultaneously a spectacle, a competition, and a collective experience.
Why is the Pyronale a Highlight for all Senses?
Because it combines everything: art, technology, and emotion. The experience is intense, whether you’re a pyro professional or simply have a heart for colors in the sky. The combination of music, functionality, and community makes it a growing Berlin tradition – regularly attracting up to 80,000 visitors.
