Around Potsdamer Platz with (and without) kids

Potsdamer Platz is a stroke of luck for Berlin: central, with great transport links – and within a 10–15 minute radius, families, culture fans and night owls will find absolutely everything. Do you have (or are you planning) your home bases in the fjord hotel berlin, LINDEMANN’S and the YARD? From there, you can quickly get right into the action. Here is our relaxed guide for days with children – and evenings just for the grown-ups.

By the way, all the following sights are marked on an interactive map at the end of the article – just like our hotels. This way you can plan optimally.

With children: discover, marvel and reach for the sky while playing

LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre
Build, romp, and marvel indoors. The LEGOLAND is a hit for 3–10 year olds: Miniland Berlin, 4D cinema, creative stations, and enough variety for two hours of fun. Our tip: Book an early slot during the week and bring snacks to keep it relaxed.

German Spy Museum
Laser course, cracking codes, testing gadgets – secret service history becomes a hands-on experience here. Kids love the “missions,” adults the surprisingly good presentation. Expect 90–120 minutes and enjoy a weatherproof option for emergencies.

Deutschlandmuseum
A journey through time without a layer of dust: sound, light, scenery – and a clear story through 2000 years. This works for teens as well as curious adults who want to dock in Berlin historically. Plus point: Understandable, compact, very photo-friendly.

German Museum of Technology & Science Center Spectrum
Large machines, many aha-moments: from the raisin bomber to steam locomotives to the hands-on laboratory. Anyone who is in the Spectrum once stays longer than planned – but don’t worry: The park at Gleisdreieck is right next door and offers space to let off steam.

Park am Gleisdreieck
Open spaces, playgrounds, skate areas – and a lot of Berlin feeling. Perfect for a sandwich break and 30 minutes of “just let it run” before moving on. Be sure to pack a picnic blanket in the summer.

Panoramapunkt (Kollhoff-Tower)
Europe’s fastest elevator takes you to the top in seconds. The view is magnificent and the Panoramacafé provides a double “moment of enjoyment.” Bonus: small exhibition on the history of the square – especially exciting with older kids.

Seasonal: Winter World & Christmas Market
Between the end of October and Christmas, the square becomes a winter stage – with a toboggan run, punch stands and glittering lights. Families love the action, best on weekdays in the late afternoon.

Grown-ups only: art, architecture, drinks with a view

Kulturforum: Neue Nationalgalerie, Gemäldegalerie, Kunstgewerbemuseum
The triple pack for cultural hunger within walking distance. Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie is worth a visit as a building. In the Gemäldegalerie, the classics hang for pausing, and the Kunstgewerbemuseum provides design to touch. Expect 60–90 minutes per house – or pick out a highlight.

Berliner Philharmonie
Either a big concert in the evening or an architectural tour during the day – both have an effect. If you are looking for spontaneous tickets, check online on the day of the event; there are often remaining tickets. Music fans combine this wonderfully with a short visit to the Kulturforum.

Gropius Bau
Changing exhibitions between art and society, excellently curated. If the weather pushes you in: exactly here. Pay attention to late openings – the atmosphere in the halls is then particularly beautiful.

Topography of Terror
Easy to read and free of charge, both inside and outside. The exhibition on Nazi history in a historical place grounds – and fits as a conscious counterpoint to shopping & glamor. For timing: plan 60–90 minutes.

Mall of Berlin – Foodcourt & Shopping
Quick pit stop? Here you will find a large selection from a quick snack to a sit-down – practical if the group has different desires. If you like, combine this with a window shopping tour around Leipziger Platz.

Gallery-Hopping Potsdamer Straße
Galleries, concept stores and small bars line up between Bülowstraße and Kurfürstenstraße. It’s worth just drifting: one or two exhibitions – and then into the next wine bar. This is Berlin in small format, unpretentious and very real.

SOLAR Skybar & Restaurant
For an evening with a view: The SOLAR sits enthroned as a sky bar/restaurant above the city and is only a few minutes away. Sundowner over the roofs, then dinner with a view – perfect as a date spot or as a “Berlin-Feel” moment after a long day.

Wintergarten Varieté
Golden, glamorous, and classic Berlin: At Wintergarten, variety meets live music, artistry, and a touch of cabaret. The shows change regularly – sometimes nostalgic, sometimes modern – and you can dine beforehand or simply enjoy the evening with a drink. Ideal if you are looking for “big entertainment” but don’t want a three-hour opera. You can find more information about the Wintergarten in our blog.

Spielbank Berlin (Casino am Potsdamer Platz)
Dress up and take a chance: Spielbank Berlin offers a mix of classics such as Roulette and Black Jack, as well as slot machines in a modern setting. Perfect for an elegant nightcap after art & dinner – whether you just watch at the bar or (responsibly!) join in at the table is up to you. Tip: Pack your ID and keep the dress code smart. You can find more information about the Spielbank in our blog.

If it rains: Plan B that feels like Plan A

Rain is no drama at Potsdamer Platz. Just bring the Spy Museum, the Deutschlandmuseum or the Gropius Bau forward. The Neue Nationalgalerie is also a safe haven. And if you have a great urge to move: the Science Center Spectrum is so much fun inside that nobody misses anything outside.

Outside & free: take a breath between two program items

For a short break in between, the outdoor areas of the Topography of Terror, a short walk through the Tiergarten from the Philharmonie or the open spaces at the Kulturforum are ideal. If you love sunsets, find a sheltered spot on the Kulturforum for a view towards City West.

Good base: our hotels in the neighborhood

The fjord hotel berlin scores with a quiet side street and a short distance to the square – ideal if you want to put your feet up for a short time at lunchtime. LINDEMANN’S is located on Potsdamer Straße, perfect for gallery hopping and nightlife. The the YARD takes you towards Kreuzberg to the water – quieter, greener, super connected. From all three houses you are in minutes at Potsdamer Platz – and in the evening just as quickly back in the room.

A few more practical tips

  • Time slots & tickets: It is worth booking in advance for LEGOLAND and the Deutschlandmuseum, then you can avoid the waiting time.

  • Public transport first: The S-Bahn and U-Bahn connect the square perfectly. Save your nerves if you are planning several stops in a row.

  • Snack strategy: Small snacks & water in your backpack keep the family peace. For “real food” we recommend early or late – it gets busy around 6–7 p.m.

  • Sunset window: If you love photos, check out the Golden Hour at Panoramapunkt – quickly up, quickly down again, maximum effect.

Conclusion: Around Potsdamer Platz you can experience Berlin in a nutshell – or in peace and quiet. With kids, it’s a mix of building, marveling, and exhausting; in the evening the city is yours: art, concerts, cocktails with a view in the SOLAR. The best thing about it: with our three hotels you have short distances, flexible retreats and the feeling of really being “right in the middle of it all”. That’s exactly what a successful Berlin trip feels like.
